On October 22, 5:15 pm in McShain Lounge, Professor Suzanne Conklin Akbari of the University of Toronto who will give a lecture entitled Marking Time: Apocalyptic Historiography in the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. In the Middle Ages, just the thought of Jerusalem and the Holy Land engendered apocalypticism among Muslims as well as Christians. Probing the ultimate "poetics of history," and not just in the medieval period, Professor Akbari examines how universal-history writing in late 13th-century Christian Acre, the Crusader's last outpost in the Levant, structured time, both the known Old Testament and Greco-Roman past and the coming end. This event is co-sponsored with the Comparative Literature Program.
