Are you an undergraduate interested in medieval studies? Are you planning travel—for fieldwork or research, language study, or other learning opportunities—during spring break or over the summer? Consider applying for the Global Medieval Studies Travel Award.
What is the Global Medieval Studies Travel Award?
The Travel Award is designed to enhance the study of the global Middle Ages, through experiential learning opportunities and fieldwork/research on places and artifacts from the period 500-1500 C.E., either in situ or in archival, library, or museum collections. You may also apply for an award to help defray costs for courses and fieldwork abroad, such as Professor Timothy Newfield’s course at the Villa le Balze, “Plague, Tuscany, and the Globalization of Disease,” or Professor Kathryn de Luna’s “Georgetown in Africa: The Africa Field School.” Intensive language programs and relevant archaeological digs are also encouraged.
In the past, students have used the travel award to visit medieval temples in India, learn Latin in England, and study holy sites in Israel.
How to apply?
Eligibility: The award is open to any student who has taken at least one Medieval Studies course (see our list of X-listed courses here), although majors and minors will be given priority.
Award: You may apply for one of four award amounts: $500, $1,000, $1,500, or $2,000.
